Island Golf

Golf across your whole desktop. Every round lays a fresh course of islands over every monitor you've got - in a tropical sea, on the moon, or right over your own spreadsheets.

Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit · 52 MB · version 1.0.1

The course

Your desktop is the fairway

Island Golf isn't a game in a little window. It takes the screens you give it and builds a course to fit them - one monitor or all of them - then zooms in on each hole as you play it.

Spans every screen

Nine holes, eighteen, or a two-hole competition, laid out over whichever monitors you pick. Drive off one screen and putt out on the next.

Or right over your work

Pick the Clear backdrop and the islands float over your own wallpaper, windows and icons. Nine holes between meetings, and nobody's the wiser.

A new course every round

Fairways, greens, bunkers, palm clumps and boulder heaps, all fresh each time, with a day's wind that veers and gusts from hole to hole.

The swing console: the wind and the yards to the pin on top, the dial with its Backswing and Power rings in the middle, and the club in hand below. The swing

Three clicks to a good drive

The swing lives on a console beside the ball - a dial with the conditions on top and your club below. Easy to learn, and it takes a while to master.

  1. Hold to take it back

The backswing ring fills while you hold the button.

  2. Let go at the top

Right on 100% and it flies straight. Early or late and it slices or hooks.

  3. Click for power

Stop the power ring on its mark. Go past 100% and you'll gain yards, but it bends.

On the green it's one smooth hold-and-release for the putter, scaled so a full stroke is the distance to the cup. Line up each shot yourself by dragging the aim, or turn on the caddy and let them pick the club, aim and power while you just swing.

Backdrops

So many places to lose a ball

Each backdrop has its own music, its own wildlife (and worse), its own weather, and a caddy who's worked there for years. Change it whenever you like, even mid-round. Here they are, in their caddies' own words.

A hole on the Ocean backdrop, with the swing consoleOcean

"Tropical islands in a sparkling blue sea. Prettiest office in the world, if you can keep it dry. I've watched grown men weep at a sunset here, then shank it into the shallows."

Salty Pete, on the atolls since '89

Miss it: In the water. The fish have quite a collection of my clients' balls.

Clear

"No scenery out here, love - the islands just float over your own desktop. Had a golfer lose a ball behind their inbox once. Never did find it."

Dot, caddying over spreadsheets for 12 years

Miss it: Onto your desktop. Mind the recycle bin.

A hole on the Lava backdrop, with the swing consoleLava

"A course on a cooling crust over a sea of molten rock. Wear sensible shoes. Rubber soles last about a round and a half."

Ash, fireproof caddy - eyebrows grown back twice

Miss it: In the lava. No drop - there's nothing left to drop.

A hole on the Desert backdrop, with the swing consoleDesert

"Oases in a sea of sand and dunes. Biggest bunker you'll ever see, and it runs clean to the horizon. I tell 'em: hit the green, then have a drink of water."

Dusty Ray, 22 summers in the dunes

Miss it: Lost in the desert. Ball's out there somewhere. So's my old hat.

A hole on the Night backdrop, with the swing consoleNight

"Golf after dark under a starry sky. Don't fret - the ball and its trail glow, so you'll always see exactly where it went wrong."

Moth, on the night shift since forever

Miss it: In the water. You hear the plop, you know the rest.

A hole on the Moon backdrop, with the swing consoleMoon

"Golf on the grey, cratered surface of the moon. It's been done before, you know - a couple of balls off a six iron, back in '71. Not a breath of wind up here, so no excuses."

Buzz, low-gravity specialist

Miss it: In the moon dust. There's no rake big enough.

A hole on the Space backdrop, with the swing consoleSpace

"Islands adrift among the stars. The ball and its trail glow, so you can watch it go a very, very long way. And play away from the black hole - trust me on this one."

Cosmo, caddied three galaxies

Miss it: Lost in space. Technically it's still travelling.

A hole on the Swamp backdrop, with the swing consoleSwamp

"A murky bayou of lily pads, logs and mud. Smells like home, cher. Keep your feet out the water and your ball on the grass, and we'll get along fine."

Boudreaux, wading the bayou since knee-high

Miss it: In the swamp. Ain't nobody fetchin' that one.

A hole on the Arctic backdrop, with the swing consoleArctic

"Ice floes in freezing polar water. Keep your hands warm and your tee shots short of the cracks. The penguins will tell you if you're standing wrong."

Sven, 40 winters on the floes

Miss it: In the icy water. Even the seals won't fetch it.

A hole on the Eden backdrop, with the swing consoleEden

"Islands in the Garden of Eden - a lush meadow of wildflowers, flowering bushes and fruit trees in the morning sun. Only one local rule, and it's about the fruit."

Gabe, caddied the very first round

Miss it: Lost in the garden. Paradise keeps what it finds.

A hole on the Sky backdrop, with the swing consoleSky

"Islands floating high above a sea of clouds. Best views on any course, and the shortest walk to heaven if you overswing near the edge."

Skip, head in the clouds since '72

Miss it: Lost in the clouds. Still falling, very politely.

A hole on the Arcade backdrop, with the swing consoleArcade

"An old CRT screen: a blue maze, pellets and scanlines. The ball and its trail glow. I've been on this bag since the cabinet was new - still haven't seen the kill screen."

Joy, high score since 1981

Miss it: Off the grid. Insert coin to continue.

A hole on the Haunted backdrop, with the swing consoleHaunted

"A fenced graveyard by moonlight - graves, dead trees and long shadows, and the steeple of a church you never quite see. Ball and trail glow, thank goodness. I don't go looking in the dark any more."

Old Mortimer, caddy here since 1847 (and after)

Miss it: Lost in the graveyard mist. Some things are best left unfound.

In the bag

And the rest of it

Wind that matters

Calm to 22 mph, shifting a little each hole. The windsock on your console shows it, and higher shots ride it further. On the moon there's none at all; up in the sky, a gale.

A caddy who knows the course

Hands you the right club, lines up the safest good shot, and has a tip or a bad joke for every backdrop while you wait.

Music for every place

Each backdrop has its own track and its own sounds - a steel-drum calypso by the sea, lounge jazz over your desktop, a lonely twang guitar out in the desert.

A console your size

Four sizes of swing console, from compact to large. Drag it wherever suits you and pin it there, and it stays put from shot to shot.

Goings-on everywhere

Sailboats and dolphins, a dragon's shadow over the lava, flying saucers, penguins on their floes. Pretty, and not one of them waits for your backswing.

A proper score card

Always in view in the clubhouse, with a little drawing of each hole. Click a hole's column to see it picked out on the course.
